Tag a customer

Tags let you group and segment your customers — by tier (VIP, Wholesale), by loyalty, or by any label that matters to your business. Tags are shared across all your customers, and reports like Profitability can segment by them.

Before you begin

  • You need permission to edit customers.

Add a tag

  1. Go to Contacts → Customers and open a customer — for example Blue Bottle Retail.
  2. On the Overview tab, find the Tags card in the right column.
  3. Click the Type to add a tag… field and start typing a tag name.
  4. Choose an existing tag from the list, or type a new name and select it to create it. The tag is saved to the customer straight away.

To remove a tag, click the on its chip.

Where tags come from

You can add tags by hand, and they're also brought in automatically from Shopify: when an order syncs, that customer's Shopify tags are attached to the matching SKU customer. See How customer tags sync from Shopify. Tags you add yourself are never overwritten by a sync.

Tags help you group and segment your customers. Open Contacts, then Customers, and select Blue Bottle Retail. On the customer's overview, find the Tags card. This customer already has one tag, Wholesale. To add a tag, click the tag field and start typing. Choose VIP from the list. The tag is saved right away. Tags are shared across your customers, so you can reuse them. You can now segment reports, like Profitability, by these tags.
