Segment the Profitability report by customer tag

The Profitability report can break your revenue, cost, and profit down by customer tag — so you can see which customer segments, such as VIP, Wholesale, or Loyalty Gold, actually drive your margin. Tag your customers once, then slice every profitability view by those tags.

Before you begin

Group by customer tag

  1. Go to Insights → Reports and open Profitability Report.
  2. Under Group By, choose Customer Tags. Each row now represents one customer segment.
  3. Set the Date Range — for example Last Year — and click Generate Report.

Every order is grouped by the tags on its customer, so each row totals the revenue, cost, and profit for that segment.

Read the results

The report opens in the Trend view: one row per customer tag, with Revenue, Cost, and Profit for each period, a Total column, and a trend chart below. Sort by any column to rank your segments.

Switch to Cost Breakdown to see where the margin goes. The summary tiles walk Revenue down through your costs to Gross Profit, Contribution Margin, and Operating Profit, and the table adds a column for each of your cost types, such as COGS, commission, and fulfilment fees.

Drill into a segment

Click any tag row to open the Order Drilldown — the exact orders behind that segment, with per-order revenue, cost, profit, and margin. It's how you go from "VIP customers earn a 39% margin" to the individual orders that make it up.

How the totals work

A customer can carry several tags, so an order counts toward every tag its customer has. That means the per-tag rows can sum to more than the grand total — the report shows a note reminding you of this. The grand total still counts each order once, so your headline figures always match true total sales.

Orders whose customer has no tags — or no customer at all — roll into a single No Tags row, so nothing is dropped.

Export it

Click Export CSV on either view to download the segmented figures — useful for a board deck, a segment-level margin review, or sharing with your accountant.

Your Profitability report can break your margins down by customer tag. To start, open Insights, then Reports, and choose Profitability Report. Under Group By, choose Customer Tags. Each row now represents a customer segment. A note reminds you that one customer can carry several tags. Set the date range to Last Year. Then click Generate Report. Every order is grouped by the tags on its customer. The Trend view shows revenue, cost, and profit for each segment, month by month. Your VIP customers lead, followed by Wholesale and Loyalty Gold. Switch to Cost Breakdown to see where the margin goes. Revenue flows down through your costs to gross profit and operating profit. Click any segment to see the exact orders behind it. Your VIP customers brought in over $84,000, at a 39% margin. You can export any view to a spreadsheet. Because a customer can have several tags, per-tag rows may total more than the grand total. The grand total still counts each order once. Orders without a tagged customer fall into a No Tags row.
