Manufacturing order status reference
A quick reference for the manufacturing order (MO) lifecycle. For the walkthrough, see Build with a manufacturing order.
Statuses
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Draft | Created but not committed. Planned quantity is still editable; nothing is reserved. |
| Confirmed | The recipe is exploded into component and output lines and inventory is reserved. Planned quantity is locked. |
| In Progress | Production has started. |
| Partially Completed | Some — but not all — of the planned quantity has been produced. |
| Completed | The full planned quantity has been produced. |
| Closed | Costs and accounting are frozen; the order is read-only. |
| Cancelled | Stopped (with a reason code). Doesn't automatically reverse movements already posted. |
Actions and their effects
| Action | From → To | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Confirm | Draft → Confirmed | Explodes the BOM (phantoms flattened) into snapshotted component + output lines and reserves inventory against the source warehouse. Shortages are allowed at this stage. |
| Unconfirm | Confirmed → Draft | Releases the reservation and discards the BOM-derived lines. |
| Start Production | Confirmed → In Progress | Begins the build. Gated on full component allocation unless you force-start through a shortage. |
| Record Production | In Progress / Partially Completed → Partially Completed or Completed | Consumes components in FIFO order (FEFO for lot-tracked), produces a finished-goods FIFO layer at the destination warehouse with component cost plus capitalized labor/overhead, and posts a WIP production journal. |
| Close MO | Completed → Closed | Freezes the cost breakdown and accounting. |
| Reopen | Closed → (Partially) Completed | Allows corrective production. |
| Cancel | any non-terminal → Cancelled | Requires a reason code; doesn't reverse already-posted movements. |
Inventory & accounting effects
- Component consumption draws down component FIFO layers (negative movements, typed manufacturing consumption / scrap).
- Finished-good production creates a new FIFO layer at the destination warehouse; its cost is the rolled-up component cost, with the outputs' share set by the BOM's cost allocation method (by weight, volume, default cost, average cost, or manual percentage), and byproducts valued and deducted first.
- Conversion costs (labor, overhead, fixed operation cost, outsourced service fee) are capitalized onto the finished-goods layers.
- With accounting enabled, each production iteration posts one balanced WIP journal — materials relieved, labor and overhead absorbed, finished goods debited — visible on the order's Accounting tab.
Related
- Outsourced orders record production by Receive Outsourced Shipment instead of Record Production, and carry a backing purchase order.
- Simple Mode and Assemblies are one-step builds without this lifecycle.
