Create a recipe (bill of materials)
A bill of materials (BOM) is the recipe for a manufactured product: the finished item plus the components it's built from and how much of each. It's versioned and has to be Active before you can build against it — so a recipe is something you draft, fill in, and activate.
Before you begin
- The finished product and every component already exist as products.
- Components you'll consume need stock in the warehouse you'll manufacture from (you set that on the manufacturing order, not here).
Create the BOM
- Go to Manufacturing → Recipes / BOMs and click New BOM.
- Give it a BOM Name (for example,
Hydration Gift Set v1), pick the Finished Product, and set Effective From (the date the recipe becomes usable). Optionally set a Manufacturing Lead Time. - Leave Set as default for this product ticked so this recipe is the one auto-picked when you create a manufacturing order.
- Click Create & Continue. The BOM opens in Draft with tabs for Details, Components, Outputs, Operations, and Activity — the finished product is already listed as the primary output.
Add the components
- On the Components tab, click Add Components and type a SKU or name to add each component line.
- Set each line's Qty (per finished unit) and, if some material is always lost, an Expected Scrap %. Leave Consumption on inherit unless a component is backflushed (issued automatically from the output).
- Click Save.
Activate it
Click Activate. Activation needs a name, a finished product, and at least one saved component — once active, the recipe is selectable on manufacturing orders. You can Archive it later to retire it from new orders without touching existing ones, and multiple versions can coexist (one flagged default).
Next steps
- Build with a manufacturing order — turn the recipe into finished stock.
- Assemble a kit — for a lighter one-step bundle build without the full order lifecycle.

A recipe — a bill of materials — is what a manufactured product is made of. Create one, name it, and pick the finished product. Add the components and their quantities, save, and activate. The recipe is now ready to build against.
